Cancer patients may benefit from the use of cooling caps.

More specifically, patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments, the cold temperatures reduces blood flow to the hair follicles. A cooling cap is basically a cap with a cooling device attached to it. Studies have shown that cooling caps reduce the loss of hair by around fifty percent or less. The patient puts on the cap half an hour before chemo treatments and then three hours after. Unlike other treatments, two types of cooling caps have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use with patients with mass tumor cancers.

Some patients are willing to deal with the discomfort if it means they get to preserve their hair. They want to turn their negative experiences into positive ones and also preserve their mental state.
