Since hair restoration became an option for men who have issues with male pattern baldness, science and technology has always looked to advance techniques of extraction. For a long time, hair transplantation was often done using what is known as the “Strip Method” or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). This is when a strip of scalp from the back of the head is removed. Hair follicles are then extracted and placed into the recipient area where hair loss is most noticeable.¬† While this was the gold standard for hair transplantation for many years, issues such pain in the extracted area and unsightly scarring are often the results of this type of procedure.

Soon, FUE became an option for hair transplantation. This is when the hair follicles are directly extracted from the donor site and placed into the recipient area. While this eliminates the noticeable scarring, FUE was often performed manually. Even at the surgeon’s best, many factors come into play during extraction such as fatigue and human error. This often leads to inconsistent and varying results in the extracted hair as well as having a longer procedure time.

Using a high-definition stereoscopic vision system, the ARTAS Robot can identify optimal hair follicles perfect for hair transplantation. This also enhances the accuracy and precision of extraction, making the last follicle removed as viable as the first, reducing the chance of transection of the hair follicle to a minimum. The ARTAS Robot uses artificial intelligence to create algorithms that are used to determine many characteristics of the hair follicle including angles, thickness and hair type to give the patient the optimal transplantation results they seek.
