FUT or FUE, What's The Difference?

So one of the biggest questions we get at Aesthetic Scalp in Chicago, IL  is, “What is the difference between FUT and FUE?”

Well, let’s begin with what they stand for. So, FUT stands for “Follicular Unit Transplantation.”  FUE stands for “Follicular Unit Extraction.”

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is pretty straight forward. This is when the hair follicle is individually extracted directly from the donor area of the head. That follicle is then prepped and then transplanted into the recipient areas of the hair line, the crown and in other areas that are experiencing hair loss.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), however, can often confuse the patient. In layman's terms, FUT is also known as ‘Strip Surgery.’ This procedure is when a single strip of hair is surgically removed from the back of the head. This strip is then processed, cut, divided, and then the hair follicles are placed into the recipient area of the scalp individually.

Each approach has their advantages and disadvantages. During your consultation at Aesthetic Scalp which includes determining the health of your scalp, Dr. Shah and Dr. Sameea will discuss which procedure will be best for you.
